Conidia shape of the multifaceted wooden club

The multifaceted wooden club ( Xylaria polymorpha ) is a tubular fungus from the genus of wooden clubs ( Xylaria ). In England the species is called "dead man's fingers" because of its appearance.

features

The multi-shaped wooden club forms 3–8 cm high and 1–3 cm wide, hard, irregular-club-shaped or flat-lobed stromata (collective fruit bodies) consisting of vegetative mycelium , in which the actual fruit bodies ( perithecia ) are sunk in one row. The collective fruit bodies, which are usually in clusters, are gray-brown to light brown when young, sometimes dusted with white by conidia spores, black as ripe specimens, dotted with fine black dots through the sunken perithecia . The interior of the stroma is white and fibrous, the smell pleasantly mushroom-like.

ecology

The multifaceted wooden club lives mostly saprobion table on the stems of deciduous trees, whereby beech is preferred, besides it can grow as a weak parasite on living trees and colonize roots. As a wood decomposer , it can also cause extensive wood rot , more than previously thought .

The species is widespread and common.

Species delimitation

The long-handled maple wood club is similar . It differs in its somewhat slimmer shape and the sterile stem part, which can be seen in the section through the fact that the perithecia can only be found in the head part. The multifarious wooden club, on the other hand, has perithecia throughout the fruiting body.

meaning

The woody stromata of the multifaceted wooden club are not usable for food purposes.
