( Poli , 1795)

The wavy scallop ( Pseudamussium clavatum , syn .: Peplum clavatum ) is a type of shell from the family of scallops (Pectinidae).

features

The unevenly hinged housings are roughly rounded to slightly obliquely egg-shaped, with the rear end being slightly more curved. The case is always a little higher than it is wide. They reach a maximum size of 28 millimeters (35 mm, 40 mm according to Poppe and Goto). The lower, right flap is more convex than the left flap, the lower edge of which is often kinked. In some shapes, the left flap can even be flat. The front ears are approximately in the shape of an equilateral triangle and show five or six radial stripes, the thickness of which increases towards the upper edge. The byssus incision is barely noticeable or is missing. The back ears are smaller than the front ears, almost triangular with a slightly curved outer edge. The umbonal angle measures a little over 90 °. The edges of the case are finely notched.

The shell is comparatively thin, but tightly shelled. The ornamentation consists of five corrugated ribs (or undulations of the shell). They end in front of the edge of the housing. The valleys between the ribs are slightly wider than the ribs. The ribs can be straight or slightly irregular. There are also fine radial striae in the vertebral area and on the bent edge of the housing of the left flap, as well as very fine growth stripes that can only be seen under a microscope or magnifying glass. The color of the upper left flap is reddish brown or brick red, often with a white flame or dot pattern. Almost white forms are also very rare. Inside, the flaps are gray-pink. The lower right flap, on the other hand, is white, yellowish-white or gray-white.

Similar species

The wavy scallop is somewhat smaller and more elongated than the seven-pointed scallop ( Pseudamussium peslutrae ). The shell is also thicker and the edges of the case are finely notched. In the latter type, the ears are also approximately the same size.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the wavy scallop reaches from the Shetland Islands to the Cape Verde Islands and into the Mediterranean .

According to Fritz Nordsieck, the depth distribution ranges from about five meters to 1,400 meters. The animals live there on muddy or muddy-sandy soft soils.

Taxonomy

The species was established by Giuseppe Saverio Poli in 1795 as Ostrea clavata . It was later assigned to the genera Pecten and Peplum . Today it is generally placed under the genus Pseudamussium .
