Geworg Kochar

Geworg Kochar (born September 18, 1901 in Tbilisi , † February 18, 1973 in Yerevan ) was a Soviet architect of Armenian origin. While he followed modernism in his student days, he adapted himself to socialist classicism in the 1930s to 1950s . From the 1960s he returned to a modern design language.

Life

Kochar's family is of Armenian origin, but he grew up in Tbilisi (see Armenians in Georgia ).

Kochar was a member of the CPSU from 1927. Kochar studied from 1920 to 1926 at the art college WChUTEMAS and from 1926 to 1929 at its successor institution, WChUTEIN in Moscow . 1932–37 he taught at the Polytechnic Karl Marx Institute in Yerevan. During the Stalin Purges , Kochar was arrested in 1937 and exiled to the Siberian cities of Norilsk and Krasnoyarsk . In the latter he lived and worked from 1939. 1955–60 he was chief architect of Krasnoyarsk. From 1960 to 1975 he was chief architect of the Yerevan project institute.
