Giacomo Bassi

Giacomo Bassi (born March 18, 1886 in Gottro ; † 1968 ) was an Italian civil servant. He was honored as Righteous Among the Nations for saving a Jewish family of five during World War II .

Life

Giacomo Bassi was born in a small town on Lake Como , near Carlazzo . Like the son later, the father worked in public administration and held the post of community secretary. Giacomo Bassi attended the Salesiani di Sondrio College , from which he graduated with a degree in surveying technology .

During the First World War he was drafted as an officer in the supply force . After the war he enrolled at the Pharmaceutical Faculty of Pavia , where he received his diploma in 1927. He then accepted a post in public administration in order to receive another diploma in veterinary medicine in 1930 .

In 1942 Giacomo Bassi was transferred from the Brugherio commune to San Giorgio su Legnano , where he stayed until 1945. Between 1943 and 1945 he was the municipal secretary of San Giorgio su Legnano and Canegrate . During this period he hid a Jewish family from Milan in the primary school in San Giorgio su Legnano and provided them with false documents and food for 15 months until Italy was liberated.

Giacomo Bassi died in 1968 and was buried in the cemetery of his birthplace in Gottro.

For the selfless rescue of the Jewish family, he was included on September 6, 1998 by the Israeli authority Yad Vashem in the directory of the Righteous Among the Nations .
