Giacomo Grassetti (* 1579 in Modena , † December 2, 1656 in Rimini ) was an Italian Jesuit .

Life

Giacomo Grassetti entered the Jesuit order at the age of 18 . After completing his studies and taking his vows, he taught rhetoric and the fine sciences at the college of his order in Modena for about ten years . He then taught moral theology in the colleges in Parma and Rimini for 20 years until he was appointed rector of the college in Mirandola . Most recently he was rector of the college in Rimini, where he died in 1656 at the age of 77.

Grassetti was an exemplary example of a Jesuit because of his piety and unconditional obedience, which he still showed his superiors in old age. His biography of Blessed Catherine of Bologna ( Vita della beata Caterina di Bologna , Bologna 1610), which appeared in many new editions (Bologna 1620, 1639, 1652 and 1724; Rome 1712 and 1715) and also in a Latin translation, was among her Time a very popular book. Grassetti's biography of the Blessed Luigi Gonzaga ( Vita del beato Luigi Gonzaga , Mantua 1618 and 1619; Modena 1638), which was also translated into Latin in 1630, does not match this work. In addition, Gonzaga's biography is partly attributed to Grassetti's fraternity Giovanni Bertolotti. Grassetti's translation of the spiritual exercises written in Spanish by the Jesuit Tomas de Villacastin ( Manuale d'Esercitii spirituali per fare l'oratione mental , Modena 1636 and Rome 1657) reproduces the meaning of the original very faithfully and in beautiful language.
