Life

The Cascata delle Marmore near Terni, 1820

At the age of 15 Giambattista Bassi began his training, which he completed in 1807, with drawing lessons from the architect Zaccaria Facchini, who later recommended him to continue his lessons at the Accademia Clementina in Bologna . In line with his training, he initially mainly produced architectural drawings, but then turned to pure landscape painting .

Together with the Bolognese landscape painters Fantuzzi, Savino and Gaetano Tramboni, who were also at the beginning of their careers, he was commissioned to decorate the Conti house in Bologna. With financial support from his hometown, he went to Rome with Tramboni. In 1809 he returned to Bologna. A little later he won a three-year Rome scholarship in the architecture class.

From the end of the 1810s he lived permanently in Rome and experienced his most successful professional years here between 1816 and 1826. In 1818 he received from Elizabeth Hervey, the Duchess of Devonshire, the commission for the Veduta di Capo Miseno . His paintings were also bought by King Ferdinand IV of Naples, Prince Heinrich of Prussia , Count Esterhazy and Lady Bentinck. Because of his success, he repeated the most popular of his pictures again and again, such as The Grotto of Posilipo .

In the 1830s he adapted his motifs more and more to the fashions of history painting . His landscapes became increasingly schematic. The figure staff and the narrative character were from now on in the foreground. In the following he lost many of his former clients and had to accept the demands of tourists in Rome. After several accidents in the family, he worked as a drawing teacher and tour guide.

Giambattista Bassi died impoverished in Rome. His tomb is in the S. Andrea fuori porta del Popolo.
