Gian Franco Bottazzo

Gian Franco Bottazzo (born August 1, 1946 in Venice ; † September 15, 2017 there ) was an Italian doctor and diabetologist .

Life

Bottazzo studied surgery and medicine at the University of Padua . In 1969, as a 23-year-old medical student, he traveled to London to the Institute of Immunology at Middlesex Hospital . He introduced himself to Deborah Doniach , a renowned autoimmunologist with a desire to learn immunopathology. After learning the laboratory methods, he returned to Padua to complete his medical degree. (Laurea 1971). He went back to Middlesex Hospital in the fall of 1973, where he stayed until 1998. He specialized in immunology and allergology from 1974 at the University of Florence and in endocrinology from 1979 at the University of Padua. 1974 could he and Doniach with the discovery of islet cells - antibodies ( islet cell antibodies , ICA), the theory of Type 1 diabetes as autoimmune disease confirmed.

In 1991 he became professor and director of the immunology department at London Hospital Medical College . Like others, he found the restructuring of London's medical schools exhausting and left England after 25 years to return to his homeland. He became Scientific Director at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome .

He has authored and co-authored over 500 scientific articles. Bottazzo received the King Faisal Prize for Medicine in 1986 and numerous other prizes such as the Oskar Minkowski Prize (1982), the R. D. Lawrence Prize and the Banting Medal of the American Diabetes Association (1992).

Private life and death

Bottazzo was married to Lamya from Kuwait and had a daughter. He died of complications from infectious endocarditis .
