Gian Luigi Rondi Nasalli (born December 10, 1921 in Tirano , † September 22, 2016 in Rome ) was an Italian film critic .

Life

Rondi moved with his family to Genoa at the age of four, and in 1935 to Rome , where he finished his school days. He enrolled in law at the university (a heart defect saved him from military service). In 1945 he graduated and got his first engagement as a journalist for the Catholic Voce operaia . Then he headed the magazine Teatro and worked with Silvo D'Amico on his biographical work on the theater and film production in Italy.

In the following years Rondi developed into one of Italy's leading film critics, writing for Il Tempo , but also for French and Belgian newspapers. In 1949 he was appointed to the jury of the Venice Film Festival for the first time ; In 1950 he started a radio section for the RAI . He carried out all of these activities for decades, some up into the new millennium.

In the 1950s, Rondi worked several times as a screenwriter. As a director, he presented a few documentaries between 1952 and 1968; once - at L'Italia è di moda 1963 - he made a full-length film. He was also occasionally engaged for television. His main work, however, remained the criticism and film theory; he was a member of the juries of all major European film festivals and headed the “Incontri Internazionali di Cinema” at those of Venice and Sorrento . In 1970 he founded the “Festival delle Nazioni”. From 1993 to 1997 he was President of the Biennale di Venezia .

Rondi published numerous writings and received many honors, so u. a. the Grand Cross of the Italian Republic , the Federal Cross of Merit and the French Legion of Honor .
