Gianluigi Gelmetti

Gianluigi Gelmetti (born September 11, 1945 in Rome ) is an Italian conductor and composer .

Life

He completed his studies with Franco Ferrara , Sergiu Celibidache and Hans Swarowsky . At the age of 16, he conducted a symphony orchestra for the first time at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.

Gelmetti held the position of chief conductor of the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart (1989–1995) and of the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra (1990–1992) for many years. In 2001 he was appointed chief conductor of the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome.

In 1984 Gelmetti made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker with the Seventh Symphony by Hans Werner Henze . Gelmetti had his first guest conducting with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1993. In 2004 he was appointed Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the ensemble. In 1997 he was appointed professor of conducting at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena . he also taught at the Conservatory of Rome.

His compositions include Algos (for orchestra), Prasanta Atma (in memory of Sergiu Celibidache) and In Paradisum Deducant Te Angeli .
