Gianni Piacentino
Gianni Piacentino (* 1945 in Coazze , Turin ) is an Italian sculptor .
life and work
Piacentino studied philosophy at the University of Turin from 1965 to 1966 , worked as a DJ in 1967 and as a consultant for a specialty paint company in 1968. At the age of 21 Piacentiono took part with Piero Gilardi and Michelangelo Pistoletto in the exhibition "Arte Abitabile" in the Gian Enzo Sperone Gallery in Turin. For a short time he belonged to the circle of Arte Povera , which was promoted by Germano Celant . His later works are more likely to be assigned to minimalism .
"" I had no role models. I was the first European minimalist. ”Because his works were a bit bulky, they were always placed against the wall in exhibitions. “I resisted and soon it was said that I had a difficult character. I also realized that I didn't fit into the group. Like the Arte Povera artists, I wasn't interested in natural materials at all. This whole rivalry got on my nerves too. I only like real competitions. And I found it in racing. "For ten years Piacentino drove as a co-pilot motorcycle races in the sidecar class, had various accidents and broke seven ribs: a top driver who was three times Italian champion in sidecar racing."
Gianni Piacentino's fascination with motorcycles, cars, airplanes and technology is reflected in his work. His objects are reminiscent of prototypes for new, albeit non-functional vehicles, and are located at the interface between art and vehicle design.
