Baron Gifford ( ˈdʒɪfəd ), of St. Leonard in the County of Devon , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was bestowed on January 30, 1824, to the Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas Sir Robert Gifford , who later held the office of Master of the Rolls . His grandson, Edric Frederick Gifford, was a soldier and employed in the colonial administration. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1874 . After his death, the title passed to his younger brother Edgar and then to their common nephew Charles . The current Baron Anthony Gifford has held the title since 1961 .

coat of arms

In the center of the coat of arms of the Barons Gifford is the coat of arms shield , on which a golden rafter surrounded by three golden stirrups is depicted on a blue background . The heraldic shield is framed by a silver border with jagged beaded interior. The upper coat of arms consists of the head of a panther framed by two oak branches. As a sign holder the right acts one Brauner on his shoulder a portcullis is displayed. On the left the shield is held by a silver greyhound with three ermines on its body . On the underside, the coat of arms is completed with the motto of the family. It is Non sine numine ( Not without God's help ).
