The Giara horse (Italian: Cavallini della Giara , Giara horse) is a feral breed of small horses that occurs exclusively in Sardinia . In addition to the breed name Giara horse, the name Achetta pony has also established itself. The origin of this name is the term is achettas , name of the Sardinian shepherds for the breed (Sardinian: achèta , female foal; achétu , male foal).
Exterior
Typical for the breed are large almond eyes, mane and tail are very pronounced. The Giara horse is about 120 to 140 cm tall. In terms of color, blacks, dark browns and browns predominate.
The type is not ponies, but small horses.
Dissemination and use
The habitat of this breed of horse is the Giara di Gesturi , a plateau on which the Giara horse lives in small family groups. The population of the breed is counted to about 500 to 800 animals. The origin of the breed is unclear, it is often said that the Punians brought the horses with them to Sardinia.
Due to the wild way of life, there is practically no use of the breed by humans. Before the summer drought, the horses are herded together and some of them are caught to regulate the population. Captured foals that are raised in human care can later be used as riding, draft or cargo horses. But it also serves as a meat supplier .
In 1996 the "XXV Comunità Montana della Giara" was founded. This should represent the interests of the wild horses and take care of the conservation of the species and the security of the population.
