Gideon Esra ( Hebrew גדעון עזרא; * June 30, 1937 in Jerusalem ; † May 17, 2012 ) was an Israeli politician .

Career

Ezra grew up in Jerusalem. He studied geography and political science at Haifa University . From 1962 to 1995 he worked for the domestic secret service Schin Bet . In 1996 he was elected to the Knesset for the Likud . In 2003 he became a cabinet member in the government of Ariel Sharon . Initially, he was Minister without Portfolio until August 31, 2004. He then became Minister of Tourism from August 31, 2004 to January 10, 2005, an office he had held since July 4, 2004. In 2004 he replaced Tzachi Hanegbi as Minister of Internal Security.

When Sharon founded Kadima , Esra also changed sides. January 2006 he became Environment Minister in the government of Ehud Olmert and held this post until March 2009.

In 2010, Esra, who had been a heavy smoker for 55 years, developed lung cancer . He then devoted himself to a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking. He died of cancer on May 17, 2012.

Esra's vacant seat in the Knesset was taken by Druze Akram Hasson .
