Life

Before he was appointed head of the Central Bank of Zimbabwe, Gideon Gono worked in various banks, most recently at the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe. He was appointed head of Zimbabwe's central bank for another five years in November 2008. Gono is repeatedly blamed for having contributed to the economic crisis, including above all hyperinflation .

He also ordered numerous arrest warrants against businessmen who were accused of not keeping their prices low enough. Some of the other economic failures for which he is responsible are the scarcity of fuel and food, as well as the hyperinflation, which Gono has increased by increasing the number of banknotes in circulation, although numerous economists had advised against it. He owns numerous farms in Zimbabwe that have been expropriated from farmers. He also owns a piece of land in Malaysia . His entry into the USA and the European Union is undesirable. He is said to have had an affair with Robert Mugabe's second wife , Grace Mugabe, by British journalist Jon Swain and the Sunday Times .

Award

In 2009 Gono was awarded the Ig Nobel Prize , a kind of "anti-Nobel prize", from Harvard University in Cambridge (USA) .
