The Gies Kerzen GmbH is a manufacturer of candles .

The company was founded in 1899 by Adam Joseph Gies as the Fulda Adam Gies wax industry . In 1921 a branch under the name Gebrüder Gies was set up in Bergedorf near Hamburg . In 1965 the company headquarters were relocated to Glinde .

In 1978, candle production at the Glinde site was extensively destroyed due to a major fire that lasted for days. After the fire ruins were torn down, a new production hall was built on the same site.

Today Gies belongs to the Swedish ALG Holding AB and produces at five European locations. With 500 employees an annual turnover of 100 million euros is achieved.

  • In 1899 Adam Joseph Gies founded the “Fulda Adam Gies wax industry” in Fulda .
  • 1921 followed in Bergedorf near Hamburg a branch under the name "Gebrüder Gies",
  • In 1965 the company's headquarters were relocated to Glinde.
  • In 1982 the company was taken over by the Flensburg spirits factory Hermann Georg Dethleffsen .
    • In addition, the latter also acquired the Danish candle factory ASP-Holmblad, which was founded in 1777, and integrated it as a Scandinavian sales company into "Gebrüder Gies GmbH & Co. KG".
  • In 1983 the Dethleffsen company also bought the Fulda Adam Gies wax industry.
  • The candle division now operated under the name "Gies candles Adam Gies GmbH & Co., Glinde and Fulda".
  • From 1985 to 1989 the Swedish company “Skane Gripen” from Malmö showed interest in a candle composite.
  • The Swiss company "Becker candles" and Gies candles were merged to form the Gies group. Production was also relocated to Glinde.
  • In 1995, the 156-year-old “Liljeholmens Stearinfabriks AB”, based in Oskarshamn , Sweden , was added as a further company.
  • since 1997 the Gies group has consisted of five European production companies. The group went public on the Swedish stock exchange under the new parent company "Liljeholmens Stearinfabriks AB".
  • In 1998 the Gies Group became a member of the "Blyth Group", a stock corporation listed on the American stock exchange.
  • In 2006 the newly founded company ALG Holding AB bought the Gies group.

Local

Among other things, one billion tea lights were produced in Glinde each year . On April 5, 2017, Gies Kerzen announced that it would cease production in Glinde. 60 employees lost their jobs.
