Type series of Sardinian-Corsican monuments

The giant tombs of S'Arena are not far from each other on the plateau of Campu Oddeu near Urzulei in the province of Ogliastra in Sardinia on a rocky plateau that also provided the building material. The ones in Sardu Tumbas de sos zigantes and in Italian plur. The buildings called Tombe dei Giganti are the largest prenuraghic cult complexes in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic complexes in Europe . Most of the 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (2,200–1,600 BC), the forerunner of the nuragic culture .

Type sequence

Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and exedra are of the older type. In later systems, the exedra consists of a square facade, significantly raised in the middle, made of processed and layered stone blocks. The giant graves of S'Arena are systems of the later type (with a block facade) -

description

The exedra and burial chambers of S'Arena were built with block stones in overlapping rows. The chamber entrances consist of two large rectangular blocks at the sides, probably as a support for a door lintel that has not been preserved. The rest of the exedra is only fragmentary. The walls of both chambers are preserved as two or three lower rows of stones. The base plates of the larger grave have also been preserved. The facilities were excavated in 2002.
