Series of types of Sardinian megaliths

The giant grave of Oridda is located near the SP 29 (Strada Provinciale), northeast of Sennori in the province of Sassari in Sardinia . The buildings called “Tumbas de los zigantes” in Sardu and “Tombe dei Giganti” in Italian (plur.) Are the largest prenuraghic cults in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . The 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (1800–1500 BC), the forerunner culture of the Nuragher .

Type sequence

Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and exedra are of the older type. In later systems, the exedra consists of a rectangular façade made of processed and layered stone blocks instead of monolithic steles . The giant grave of Oridda is of the older type (with portal stele). The discovery of the grave in the 1960s was made while expanding a vineyard. The giant tomb was intact at that time.

description

The Giant Tomb of Oridda is unique in that the architecture mirrors that of dolmens , with the walls of the gallery and exedra made of drywall , while large blocks have been used for the ceiling. In front of the square (not, as usual, phallic ) portal stele, into which the entrance is cut, lies an approximately 6.5 m long dromos . In the gallery examined by Editta Castaldi in 1986 , 27 human skeletons were found, including 20 adults, six children and a fetus. Analysis of the skeletons allowed them to be dated between 1350 and 1250 BC. Chr.

It has never been established with certainty whether it is a Domus de Janas reused at a later date , or whether it was designed as a dolmen built in two stages.
