The giant tomb of Palatu (also Palattu) is like the giant tomb of Lassia in the foothills of the Marghine on the outskirts of the village Birori , in the province of Nuoro in Sardinia . The buildings called “Tumbas de los zigantes” in Sardu and “Tombe dei Giganti” in Italian (plur.) Are the largest prenuraghic cults in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . The 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (1,800–1,500 BC), the forerunner culture of the Nuragher .

Type sequence

Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and exedra are of the older type. In later systems, the exedra consists of a square facade, significantly raised in the middle, made of processed and layered stone blocks. The gigantic grave Palatu is an older type (with portal stele).

description

The north-west-south-east oriented tomb consists of the rectangular chamber part (length 14.5 m, width 4.0 to 4.3 m) with apse and a flat exedra (11.7 m wide and 3.25 m deep). The wall of the chamber and the exedra are made of large plates. The interior of the chamber has a length of 11.55 m, a width of 1.1 m and a protruding base made of medium-sized stones. The surrounding ground, like part of the exedra, was originally paved. Inside, the chamber has two square wall niches opposite the entrance. The left niche (0.85 meters wide, 0.6 m deep and 0.84 meters high) is formed by three side panels and the floor. The niche on the right is built similarly. The bottom of the niches is slightly raised (30 cm) and consists of two stones. The side wings of the exedra consist of eight broken orthostats (about 0.30 m thick, with widths of 1.1 to 1.75 m and heights of 2.25 to 1.25 m), while the portal stele provides access to the burial chamber formed, went out. At the foot of the exedra was a bank altar made of medium-sized blocks.

The Sarbogadas dolmen is nearby.
