River course
The Gilbert River rises in a hilly area 70 km west-northwest of Port Hope Simpson at an altitude of 360 m . A few kilometers further north is the headwaters of the Main Brook , the right headwaters of the Hawke River . The Gilbert River flows mainly in an east-southeast direction. At the middle reaches the elongated lake Jeffries Pond . At river kilometer 32 the Gilbert River leaves the lake and flows almost dead straight for the next 15 kilometers in an east-southeast direction. Route 514 , which connects the Trans-Labrador Highway with Charlottetown , crosses the river at river kilometer 17 . This immediately flows through a nameless 648 hectare lake, which flows directly into the neighboring Gilbert Lake (almost 13 km² area). Below Gilbert Lake, the Gilbert River flows just under 3.5 km to its confluence with Gilbert Bay . The estuary is 12 km south of Charlottetown. Immediately at the mouth there is a 6.1 m high vertical waterfall. This is considered an insurmountable obstacle for migratory fish . Removing this natural barrier could make the river system accessible to salmon , for example . The relatively narrow elongated catchment area of the Gilbert River covers 642 km². It borders on the Shinney Waters and the Alexis River to the south .
