The Hawke River is a 54 km long tributary of the Labrador Sea in the southeast of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The Hawke River arises at the confluence of its two source rivers Mountain Brook and Main Brook at an altitude of about 125  m . It initially flows 10 km to the southeast. Then it turns towards the north-northeast and finally it flows towards the east-northeast. Major tributaries of the Hawke River are Southwest Feeder from the right and Beaver Brook , Western Feeder, and Northwest Feeder from the left. The Hawke River flows into the head end of the northern arm of the elongated fjord-like Hawke Bay . The estuary is 19 miles north of the Charlottetown parish . Hawke Harbor is located 25 km east of the mouth at the exit of the bay on Hawke Island . Including the right source river Main Brook , the total length is 90 km. The two source rivers arise in a hilly area at about 400  m . The Trans-Labrador Highway ( Route 510 ) runs five miles south of the upper reaches of the Main Brook . The catchment area of the Hawke River covers 1891 km². The hills are covered with forests of black pine and balsam fir .

Fish fauna

Atlantic salmon and the non-anadromous form of brook trout occur in the Hawke River .
