Gilbert César Temmerman (born February 25, 1928 in Gent-Ledeberg , East Flanders , Belgium ; † January 19, 2012 ) was a Belgian politician of the Socialist Partij Anders (SP.A) and former mayor of Ghent.

biography

After finishing school, he worked for the local government of Ledeberg, a sub-municipality of Ghent, and worked for the socialist Flemish daily Vooruit .

He began his political career in 1958 when he was elected for the first time as a member of the Ghent Municipal Council , to which he was a member until 1994 as a representative of the Belgian Socialist Party and the SP. In 1971 he was elected aldermen (alderman) of Ghent and held this position until 1976. At the same time, he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies between 1971 and 1989 , where he represented the interests of the Ghent and Eeklo arrondissements .

After leaving the Chamber of Deputies, he was mayor of Ghent from 1989 to 1994. On May 26, 1992 he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State for his services .
