Gilberto Braga

Gilberto Tumscitz Braga (born November 1, 1946 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian screenwriter .

Braga was born in the Vila Isabel district of Rio de Janeiro, the son of diplomats. Initially, under the influence of his parents, he sought a diplomatic career in his youth, this idea was discarded before it could ever be realized. He attended the Pedro II University and in 1968 went to Paris for a few months on a scholarship to study there. A little later he returned to Brazil and works there as a teacher for French .

In addition to his teaching activities, he also wrote for five years as a film and theater critic for the newspaper O Globo . In 1973 he made his TV debut as a writer. In collaboration with Lauro Cesar Muniz he developed the telenovela Gold Race (1974). Gilberto had already worked with Muniz in Jackal (1973) and is working with him again in Ascent (1975). Gilberto Braga was the first Brazilian author to write exclusively for television. He was responsible for some television adaptations of popular novels, but the biggest hit was The Slave Isaura , based on the novel of the same name by Bernardo Guimarães . It was the most successful sales telenovela of all time and made the actress Lucélia Santos internationally known. In 2004 the station Rede Globo successfully invested in a second adaptation of the novel with Bianca Rinaldi in the title role.

Gilberto Braga is open about his homosexuality and is married to Brazilian decorator Edgar Moura.
