Gillett Griffin
Gillett Good Griffin (born 1928 in Brooklyn , New York City , † June 9, 2016 in Princeton ) was the curator of the library at Princeton University .
Life
His parents, Albert and Alma Griffin, moved with him to Greenwich , where he attended Greenwich Country Day School and became passionate about history, art and classical music. From 1942 he attended the Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. He began collecting New England children's books prior to 1846. In 1947 he was accepted at the Yale School of Fine Arts. He developed an interest in pre-Columbian art. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1951, he continued his studies at Yale. He wrote and illustrated the children's book A Mouse's Tale . In the summer of 1952 he succeeded Elmer Adler, the curator for graphic design at Princeton University Library . In 1954 he was invited to dinner by Margot Einstein. In 1957 he designed books for Princeton University Press. In 1966 he traveled to Mexico for a year, where he discovered Olmec pictures in the Juxtlahuaca Cave . On his return he became a curator of pre-Columbian and primitive art at Princeton University Art Museum.
