Gilvánfa is a Hungarian municipality with about 400 inhabitants in Baranya County near the border with Croatia . It belongs to the Sellye small area .

The name of the place was derived from the Hungarian name for a tree sponge ( gilva , common sulfur sponge ). The village, which has belonged to the Count Batthyány family since 1775 , is now predominantly inhabited by Roma who live in extreme poverty. The painter Fenyvesi József (1928–2005) was born here.
