history

Gilzum Church

The local church , the Georgius Church, was built around 1365 from Elm limestone and is not in the center of the village, but free on the south-eastern edge of the village; that is a specialty in this region. It belonged to the 17th century the bishops of Halberstadt and was on the 14th to the late 17th century to the of Ampleben to which of Sambleben and to the of grams invested .

Farmland and land ownership often changed hands, including the Bokel monastery near Gifhorn , Riddagshausen and Destedt monastery , Lorenzstift before Schöningen , as well as the Cyriakus pen and the Martini church in Braunschweig .

In the 15th century, 12 men lived in the village, 14 in 1549 and 17 in 1550. It was customary to count only men at the time. In 1635 there were 49 adults in Gilzum and in 1774 there were already 152. In 1802 there were two farms in Gilzum, two half- span farms , nine Kothöfe , a Brinkitzerstelle and 18 fire places and 191 residents.

In 1895 a new school building was erected, which in 1950 became too small and school lessons were moved to Hachum. The village community center is now located in the old school building in Gilzum. On March 1, 1974, Gilzum and Hachum were incorporated into Evessen. The place is structured in a rural way and lies on a foothill of the Elm on heavy soil. Today (2008) only two farmers still farm in the village .
