The Gimenez stain is a histological technique for staining bacteria in animal tissues , particularly rickettsia , Legionella , Bartonella and Coxiella burnetii .

The Gimenez stain is used to detect bacterial infections . The staining solution contains basic fuchsin in an aqueous solution with phenol and ethanol (then referred to as carbol fuchsin ). The fuchsin stains Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in red, magenta or pink. A blue-green counterstaining of the fabric is achieved by adding malachite green to the staining solution, alternatively by counterstaining with saffronines . The May-Grünwald staining and, in some cases, the Macchiavello staining (not suitable for staining R. tsutsugamushi ) are used as alternatives to the staining of rickettsiae .

history

Gimenez staining was first described in 1964 by Domingo F. Giménez as a method for staining rickettsiae in yolk sac cultures.
