from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gintaras Beresnevičius (born July 7, 1961 in Kaunas , † August 5, 2006 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian religious scholar , writer and publicist .

Life

In 1984 Beresnevičius graduated from the History Faculty of Vilnius University . After 1986 he worked at various universities and received his doctorate in 1993 under Norbertas Vėlius .

He was the author and editor of numerous scientific books. He wrote over 100 scientific articles. He was last seen as the most profound expert on Baltic mythology and religious history. In 2003 he published a textbook for use in religious education in the 11th and 12th grades.

His essays and commentaries appeared mainly in the magazine Naujasis Židinys and the weekly cultural newspaper Šiaurės Atėnai (North Athens), of which he was co-editor, as well as on various internet news portals. He has also published several volumes of essays (also under pseudonyms such as Antanas Sereda ) and a novel. He was honored by the President of Lithuania for his collection of essays Ant laiko ašmenų on the history of Lithuania . In 2004 he supported Kazimiera Prunskienė during her presidential candidacy .

Most recently, Beresnevičius worked at the Vilnius University at the Center for Religious Studies and at the Institute for Culture, Art and Philosophy. Despite his outstanding academic achievements, and although his lectures at Kaunas University were the most popular events at that university, he was not appointed professor.

His death on August 5, 2006 is not known in detail. What is certain is that he was expelled from a bar under the influence of alcohol and the police were called. Initially, the police officers were investigated, but these were closed in October 2006. The official interpretation, according to which Beresnevičius died not from the consequences of abuse by police officers, but from heart failure , is hardly accepted due to many contradictions.
