Norbertas Vėlius

Norbertas Vėlius (born January 1, 1938 in Gulbės, now Šilalė Rajong municipality ; † June 23, 1996 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian cultural scientist, ethnographer , folklorist , mythologist and religious scholar , most recently full professor at the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas .

Life

From 1947 to 1954 Vėlius studied at the Laukuva Middle School near Šilalė and then worked as a school teacher. From 1957 to 1962 he graduated from the Vilnius University with a diploma in Lithuanian language and literature . From the first year of study he collected folklore. In 1989 he received his doctorate on the subject of "Chtoniškasis lietuvių mitologijos pasaulis" and was awarded the state prize. In 1992 he became a professor . Vėlius has taught at Šiauliai University, Vilnius University, Lietuvos muzikos akademija and Vilnius Art Academy .

Vėlius was married. His daughter is Rūta Vėliūtė-Paberžienė, a teacher at the Čiurlionis Art School in Vilnius.

His grave is in the Antakalnis cemetery .

Act

Vėlius is the author and editor of numerous books, including a critical collection of all known sources on Baltic religion and mythology in the original language and Lithuanian translation. He has also initiated a three-volume anthology on the early history of research on the Baltic religion. Books are still being published, the conception and comments of which were created by Vėlius.

• The conference reading “Profesoriaus Norberto Vėliaus skaitymai” has been organized every year since 2008
• In 2012 the memorial sculpture "Letter to Prof. Norbertas Vėlius" (Sculptor Arvydas Ališanka) was built in the Balsiai Mythological Park at the Balsiai Secondary School (8 Bubilo Street) Verkiai District (Vilnius)
