The Lithuanian Music and Theater Academy ( Lithuanian : Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademija , LMTA ; Lat . : Academia musicae et theatri Lithuaniae ) in Vilnius , Lithuania , is a state university music school that trains students of music , theater and multimedia arts .

history

The composer Juozas Naujalis founded a music school in 1919, which was converted into the Kaunas Conservatory in 1933 . In 1945 the library of the Lithuanian Music and Theater Academy was established. In 1949 the Kaunas Conservatory and the Vilnius Conservatory were merged to form the Lithuanian State Conservatory. In 1992 the State Conservatory was renamed "Lithuanian Music Academy" ( Lietuvos muzikos akademija, LMA ), and in 2004 the institution was given its current name.

In January 2005, the Lithuanian Music and Drama Academy had 1,167 students who were taught by 274 people.

Zbignevas Ibelgauptas has been the rector since 2011, and the academy is headed in a palace on Gediminas Prospect . There are two faculties in Vilnius : the Faculty of Music and the Faculty of Theater and Film (formerly 3: the Faculty of Piano and Musicology , the Faculty of Instrumental and Choral Music and the Faculty of Theater and Film ). A department of the music faculty is in Kaunas , this partially doubles the offerings of the two Vilnius musical faculties. The third faculty, Klaipėda, is located in the Lithuanian port city.

The Academy awards the following university degrees: Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in music, theater, multimedia arts , and a doctoral degree for graduates in musicology, folk musicology, and theater theory and history. There is also a licentiate for a two-year postgraduate course for musicians, composers and directors .

The academy strives to "develop international cooperation and integration into the European and worldwide academic community, support and facilitate the exchange of students and teachers, and ensure high quality standards in higher art education."

Students and professors perform at over 400 concerts a year. They take part in national and international orchestras, events, competitions and festivals. The academy itself sponsors the Jascha Heifetz International Violin Competition and an international competition for singers and piano accompanists . She participates in the International Piano and Organ Competition Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis . She also organizes auditions for participation in the European Union Youth Orchestra , the International Choir and Orchestra Academy in Stuttgart and the International Holland Music Sessions, as well as other auditions for grants.

International cooperation

The LMTA has bilateral agreements with 72 partner institutions across Europe through the Socrates program . In 2003 she set up a credit point system that is comparable to the European Credit Transfer System .

In addition, the university has signed bilateral or multilateral agreements with the Belarusian State Music Academy, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and its School for Slavic Traditional Music, the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in Saint Petersburg and the University of Kansas .
