Jurgis Karnavičius (born April 6, 1912 in Saint Petersburg , † October 5, 2001 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian pianist and music teacher, professor at the Lithuanian Music and Theater Academy .

Life

Jurgis Karnavičius graduated from the Music School in Kaunas and 1933 studies at Kauno konservatorija at Lidija Dauguvietytė . From 1934 to 1938 he continued his education in Berlin and Paris with Alexander Lieberman . From 1938 to 1941 he taught piano privately in Kaunas. From 1941 to 1949 he taught at the Kaunas Conservatory and from 1949 to 1993 at the Lithuanian Conservatory . From 1949 to 1983 he headed it as rector . From 1969 he taught as a professor . From 1943 to 1944 he worked in the Kaunas Theater and from 1944 to 1946 in the Kaunas State Theater as concertmaster. In 1947 he directed the Kaunas Music School and from 1948 to 1949 the Juozas Gruodis School Kaunas as director.

His father was the composer Jurgis Karnavičius (1884–1941). His son is the pianist Jurgis Karnavičius (* 1957).
