Giorgi Revazishvili

Giorgi Rewazischwili or Georgi Rewazischwili (born November 16, 1974 in Sagaredscho ) is a former Georgian judoka who was runner-up in the super lightweight division in 1997.

Athletic career

The 1.68 m tall Rewazischwili mostly competed in the half-light weight, the weight class up to 65 kilograms, from 1998 to 66 kg.

At the European Championships in 1994 he started in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kilograms. After defeating Ukrainian Vyacheslav Pilipenko in the quarter-finals , he lost in the semi-finals to Nazim Hüseynov from Azerbaijan. In the battle for bronze he defeated the Russian Tinaw Akhmedov . Half a year after the European Championships, Rewazishvili won the semi-lightweight title at the Junior World Championships in Cairo. In May 1996 the European Championships took place in The Hague. Rewazischwili defeated the German Peter Schlatter in the semifinals and the British Julian Davis in the final of the semi-light weight. As the reigning European champion, he won his first fight at the Olympic Games in Atlanta against the Argentine Francisco Morales through Waza-ari. In his second fight he was defeated by the Belgian Philip Laats after 4:24 minutes by Ippon. In the round of hope he defeated Orlando Fuentes from the United States and Jarosław Lewak from Poland each through Ippon. After his Ippon defeat against the Cuban Israel Hernández , Rewazishvili finished in seventh place.

At the European Championships in 1997 in Ostend he reached the final with victories over the Hungarians József Csák and the Swedes Gabriel Bengtsson , where he was defeated by the Turkish Hüseyin Özkan and received the silver medal. In July 1997, Rewazishvili won the tournament in Tbilisi. He then reduced his weight and competed in the super light weight world championships in Paris in October . There he defeated the Brazilian Fúlvio Miyata in the semifinals , and in the final he lost to the Japanese Tadahiro Nomura . In early 1998, Rewazishvili won the half-light weight at the Paris tournament. At the 1998 European Championships in Oviedo, he lost to French Larbi Benboudaoud in the semi-finals , and defeated German Martin Schmidt in the battle for bronze . In 1999 he finished fifth at the European Championships. At the 1999 World Championships , Rewazishvili competed in the lightweight, the weight class up to 73 kilograms. In the quarterfinals he lost to Jimmy Pedro from the United States. Rewazishvili won a bronze medal with victories over Andrei Golban from Moldova , Anatol Larukou from Belarus and Miklós Illyés from Hungary . Also in the lightweight he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in 2000 in Wroclaw. After a semi-final defeat against the Russian Vitaly Makarov , he defeated the Romanian Claudiu Baştea in the battle for bronze . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he was eliminated in the first round against the Uzbek Andrey Shturbabin . In 2002 Rewazischwili finished fifth again at the European Championships, at the World Team Championships in Basel he won the silver medal behind the Japanese with the Georgian team. In December 2003, at the end of his career, he won the title at the European Team Championships.
