Giorgio Boris Giuliano
Giorgio Boris Giuliano (born October 22, 1930 in Piazza Armerina , Enna province , † July 21, 1979 in Palermo ; also Boris Giuliano ) was a senior Sicilian police officer. He was head of the Squadra mobile of Palermo.
Life
Born in the rural province of Enna , Giuliano was one of the few committed police officers who investigated the Cosa Nostra , as the Sicilian mafia calls itself, in the 1970s . In the early 1970s he was involved in the investigation into the murder of journalist Mauro De Mauro .
From the mid-1970s he began researching the Cosa Nostra's drug trafficking . The main target of his investigation were the important mafia bosses Stefano Bontade and Salvatore Inzerillo , then leaders in drug trafficking. He also investigated Filippo Marchese , also an important Mafioso. In his investigation he was almost entirely on his own, as most of his colleagues either made pacts with the Cosa Nostra or were intimidated by it and preferred to remain inactive.
Giuliano reached in its investigations to the realization that the major banker Michele Sindona ( "the savior of the lira" according to Giulio Andreotti ) for the Cosa Nostra proceeds from the heroin trade was washing . For this he also used the Vatican bank . Giuliano learned through a suitcase containing 500,000 dollars that was accidentally discovered at the airport in Palermo that the Cosa Nostra also used several banks and savings banks in Palermo to launder money. He also discovered the hiding place of Leoluca Bagarellas , an important leader of the Corleonesi , the Cosa Nostra of Corleone . However, Bagarella was able to escape shortly before his hiding place was discovered. In Bagarella's hiding place, Giuliano came across other important documents.
Shortly afterwards, on the morning of July 21, 1979, Giuliano was shot and killed by Bagarella while he was having a coffee in a bar. Giuliano had become one of the Corleonesi's many victims. Most of the documents he had seized disappeared without a trace after his death.
