from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giornale di Sicilia is an Italian- language daily newspaper based in Palermo . The political orientation is rather conservative-centrist. The Giornale di Sicilia is the best-selling daily newspaper in Sicily . It has been controlled by the Gazzetta del Sud publishing house in Messina since August 2017 .

history

The newspaper was founded in 1860 by Girolamo Ardizzone , who was also the first editor-in-chief . Shortly after Giuseppe Garibaldi landed on Sicily with his one thousand irregulars (" Train of the Thousand "), it first appeared on June 7, 1860 under the name Giornale officiale di Sicilia (Sicily's Official Newspaper). This makes Giornale di Sicilia one of the oldest newspapers in Italy . The majority of the shares are still in the hands of the Ardizzone family. The current editor is Antonio Ardizzone.

On January 26, 1979, Mario Francese , the then crime reporter for the Giornale di Sicilia, was shot in Palermo by the Cosa Nostra , the Sicilian mafia .

In recent years, however, the newspaper has made a name for itself through its repeated controversies with the former mayor of Palermo, Leoluca Orlando , and the Italian Communist Party .

Giornale di Sicilia is currently published in 10 different editions and appears in one version each for Palermo, Trapani , Agrigento , Marsala , Gela , Caltanissetta , Messina, Catania , Enna as well as for Syracuse and Ragusa and thus covers all the provinces of Sicily.
