Giovan Battista Martinetti
Giovan Battista Martinetti (born December 24, 1764 in Bironico ; died October 10, 1830 in Bologna ) was a Swiss - Italian architect of classicism .
Education and career
Martinetti came to Bologna from Ticino in 1775 at the instigation of his father, a master mason. There he later studied architecture and engineering. In the office of civil engineer, he planned numerous torrent barriers as well as road and bridge construction, including the Porrettana , the important Appennine connection from Bologna to Florence. As a designer of public spaces, parks and early urban planner, he created the current circular design of the Giardino della Montagnola in Bologna. In addition to - unfinished - projects for a theater and an anatomy laboratory at the University of Bologna , he built several buildings in Rome , including the slaughterhouse on Foro Flaminio.
As his own residence, he built an old monastery during the Napoleonic period. He was married to Cornelia Rossi di Lugo, a countess who ran a literary salon in Bologna, which Foscolo , Canova , Leopardi and other artists visited; Byron , Shelley , Stendhal , Monti , Beauharnais , Chateaubriand and Ludwig are also named as visitors.
