Giovan Giacomo Leonardi

Giovan Giacomo Leonardi (* early November 1498 in Pesaro ; † 1562 ) was an Italian lawyer and diplomat from the Leonardi della Rovere Montelabate family . His opinion influenced the establishment of the Valletta fortress in Malta .

Leonardi studied law in Bologna and Ferrara , where he obtained his doctorate in 1522. He then began his military career, first with Francesco II Sforza in Milan, then under various imperial mercenary leaders. During the French siege of Pavia in 1525, he gave useful advice on how to fortify the city. During this time he also entered the service of the Venetian captain general Francesco Maria I della Rovere , who recognized and used his diplomatic skills. A few years later he was governor of Senigallia and then of Gubbio . From 1528 to 1559 the Dukes of Urbino repeatedly sent him as ambassadorVenice .

In 1540 Guidobaldo II della Rovere made him Count of Montelabbate (in today's province of Pesaro and Urbino ).

His work Libro delle fortificazione dei nostri tempi was about to go to press when he died. It was published in 1975 by Tommaso Scalesse.
