Giovanni Anastasi (dealer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Anastasi , also Giovanni d'Anastasi , Jean d'Anastasy , Ioannis Anastasiou (* 1765 in Northern Greece , † August 6, 1860 in Alexandria ) was a Greek merchant and antique dealer active in Egypt.

Life

Giovanni Anastasi was born in what was then Ottoman Northern Greece, either in Thessaloniki or Serres . His father went to Egypt around 1797, where he set up a business as a supplier to the French troops, but went bankrupt after they were driven out. Giovanni was able to build up a flourishing business as a trader, especially grain, and shipowner, and from 1828 to 1857 he worked as the Swedish consul in Egypt. In addition to his other businesses, he began trading Egyptian antiquities, which he acquired directly from the local population in Saqqara and Thebes, for example. In 1828 he and Francis Barthow sold a large collection of around 6000 pieces via Livorno in Italy to the Dutch government for the Museum in Leiden , another in 1839 to the British Museum and a third collection of 1129 numbers was auctioned in Paris in 1857. He bequeathed part of his fortune to Swedish charities and a large sarcophagus to the Stockholm Museum .

He should not be confused with Giovanni d'Athanasi (1798–1854), who was also a Greek antiques dealer in Egypt .
