Giovanni Anselmo (born August 5, 1934 in Borgofranco d'Ivrea , Italy ) is an Italian sculptor and object artist and an important representative of Arte Povera .

life and work

Giovanni Anselmo studied painting at the Turin Art School and worked for a time as a painter. In the early 1960s he tried to break away from conventional painting, which for him had " something unrealizable ".

As a sustainable artistic imprint, he describes a natural spectacle as a key experience on a morning walk in August 1965 on the island of Stromboli . Suddenly he noticed that he was not casting any shadow, the morning sun was at too shallow an angle. His vision was that his " invisible shadow " would reunite with the light in infinity. The preoccupation with the phenomena and forces of nature became his artistic goal in life.

Giovanni Anselmo's works of art contain his lifelong engagement with the forces of nature. He often uses raw materials such as rough wooden blocks, iron bars, granite blocks, and various other materials for his objects.

He took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Individual Mythologies : Processes department and was also represented as an artist at Documenta 7 in 1982.
