Giovanni Antonio Amato il Vecchio
Giovanni Antonio Amato (called il Vecchio = the elder) (* around 1475 in Naples ; † around 1555 ibid) was an Italian painter, active in Naples.
No contemporary documents are known about him; most of the knowledge about him goes back to his biography with Bernardo De Dominici .
After that he is said to have been a pupil of a certain Silvestro Bruno, who is often identified with Silvestro Buono , but this is not possible for chronological reasons (* around 1520). His style is said to have been influenced by Perugino . He made paintings or frescoes in numerous churches in Naples (none of them preserved or verifiable): SS. Severino e Sossio ("Tavola degli Arcangeli"), S. Nicola (destroyed by fire), S. Domenico Maggiore, S. Caterian, S. Potito all'Anticaglia, S. Pietro ad Aram, S. Maria del Carmine, S. Lorenzo Maggiore and in the cathedral S. Gennaro .
The painter Giovanni Antonio Amato il Giovane was reportedly his nephew and pupil. Among his students are u. a. Giovanni Bernardo Lama , Giovanni Vincenzo Corso , Pietro Negroni and Cesare Turco were counted.
