Giovanni Antonio Cybei (born February 3, 1706 in Carrara , † September 7, 1784 in Carrara) was an Italian sculptor during the Rococo and early Classicism periods and director of the Art Academy in Carrara.

Life

Born in the Tuscan town characterized by its marble quarries and countless sculpture workshops, Cybei joined the Roman sculptor Agostino Cornacchini's studio as early as 1721 . From 1728 he worked again in Carrara, in the workshop of his uncle, the sculptor Giovanni Baratta . The independent work begins with orders from Sarzana . His ordination as a priest in 1739 marked a career break. Around 1742 he ran the Baratta studio, which he inherited after his uncle's death (1747). Around the middle of the century he found his early classicist style and received extensive and prominent commissions from private and ecclesiastical sources, including from European courts in Russia, Prussia and Portugal. In 1769 he was given the management of the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Carrara, newly founded by the enlightened, liberal Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Tuscany . Until his death in 1784 he remained active as a sculptor (working in marble according to the style of the time and the circumstances of the place).
