Stužica primeval beech forest

Stužica is a national nature reserve in Slovakia, a Carpathian primeval beech forest in the deep valley of the Stužická rieka brook in the Bukovské vrchy mountain range . It is located in the extreme northeast of Slovakia, southwest of the tri-border point Slovakia - Poland - Ukraine ( Kremenec Mountain ) near the municipality of Nová Sedlica and is part of the Poloniny National Park .

The area was already under protection in 1908. The national nature reserve was established in 1965 and the borders were last updated in 1993, so that the nature reserve is now 761.49 hectares. The reason for the protection under the strictest fifth level is the presence of original beech and fir forests and the variety within the vegetation zones from 620 to 1,208 m nm. The mountain meadows, the poloniny , are also protected.

Since 2007, Stužica has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Primeval Beech Forests in the Carpathian Mountains” (today Primeval Beech Forests and Old Beech Forests of the Carpathian Mountains and other regions of Europe ) along with three other Slovakian and six Ukrainian nature reserves .
