Giovanni Antonio Magini
Giovanni Antonio Magini (born June 13, 1555 in Padua , † February 11, 1617 in Bologna ) was an Italian astronomer and mathematician .
Magini studied philosophy in Bologna until 1579 , and later devoted himself to astronomy. In 1582 he published the work Ephemerides coelestium motuum , which was translated into Italian a year later.
Magini became professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna in 1588 .
In 1592 he published De Planis Triangulis , where he described the use of the quadrants . In 1607 he published the astrological work De astrologica ratione .
Magini also created an atlas of Italy ( Atlante geografico d'Italia ), which, however, was not published by his son until 1620.
In 1935 the lunar crater Maginus was named after him.
