Giovanni Battista Cirri (born October 1, 1724 in Forlì ; † June 11, 1808 there ) was an Italian cellist and composer of the 18th century.

Life

Giovanni Battista Cirri received his first music lessons from his brother Ignazio Cirri (1711–1787), who was the organist at the Cathedral of Forli. He then continued his studies with the then famous Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna. In 1759 Cirri became a member of the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica .

From 1760 Cirri worked in Paris for about five years . There he published his first works, one of his symphonies was performed on April 5, 1763 at the Concert Spirituel , which was a special honor.

In 1764 he settled in London , where he had a job as a chamber musician with the Duke of York . His first public appearance took place in May 1764, as the accompanist of a violinist named Marcella. He also appeared as a soloist in 1764/65 on the occasion of the young Mozart 's performances in London . He also appeared at the so-called " Bach - Abel Concerts", which were popular at the time .

Later he was "Director of music" with the Duke of Gloucester . During his time in London he composed three sonatas for cello and basso continuo, which were published in 1765.

In 1780 he returned to Forli and assisted his sick brother for a while. In 1782 Cirri was the first cellist at the "Teatro dei Fiorentini" in Naples . In 1787 he followed his brother as Kapellmeister at the cathedral of Forli.
