Life

He was born into a wealthy family in Borgo Sacco near Rovereto in what is now the autonomous province of Trento, then County of Tyrol . His wish to join the KuK Austro-Hungarian Army since the outbreak of war was initially rejected because of his too small stature. Later it was called up after all. Most recently he was a captain in the 2nd regiment of the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger, which, like the entire Kaiserjäger troop, consisted of more than 40% Italian-speaking South Tyroleans (Welschtirolern).
