Giovanni Benedetto Platti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Benedetto Platti (German also: Platt ; * probably July 9, 1697 (according to other sources: approx. 1690, 1692, 1700) in Padua ; † January 11, 1763 in Würzburg ) was an Italian oboist and composer of the late Baroque.

Life

Platti received his musical training in Italy (especially singing, oboe, violin). Even in these early Italian years of his work (until 1722) he met in Siena that of Bartolomeo Cristofori developed from 1711 fortepiano ( fortepiano ) know and already composed specially sonatas.

In 1722 he was brought to Würzburg as an oboe virtuoso in the service of the prince-bishops of Bamberg and Würzburg, where in the same year Fortunato Chelleri also worked as court conductor (until 1725). Platti remained active at the Würzburger Hof until his death in 1763, and from 1729 also as a singer, singing teacher and violinist. The Würzburg prince-bishops, Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn (prince-bishop 1719–1724) and his younger brother Friedrich Carl von Schönborn (prince-bishop 1729–1746), were very interested in unusual and new keyboard instruments from Italy; Because of this and because of the musicians they sponsored, such as Platti, the Main and Rhenish Franconian area gained a special role with regard to the development of the table piano, for example. In February 1723, Platti married the soprano Maria Theresia Lambrucker († 1752), who was a court singer in Würzburg.

Works (selection)

Platti's works are mainly preserved as manuscripts in the music collection of Count Rudolf Franz Erwein von Schönborn - Wiesentheid , for whom Platti composed a whole series of works for cello, including 28 cello concertos, which are among the most interesting of the transition period between late baroque and early classical periods.
