Giovanni Cariani (* around 1485/90 in San Giovanni Bianco ; † November 26, 1547 in Venice ; actually Giovanni Busi ) was an Italian painter.

Life

Giovanni Cariani probably came to Venice at a young age, where he was first mentioned in 1509. Little is known about his education and early years. Since most of his early works have either been lost or not yet identified, one can only assume that he was trained by one or more Venetian masters. What has been preserved indicates a variety of influences. A Madonna with the Doves (now in Bergamo Cathedral ) clearly points in the direction of the late Giovanni Bellini . A Madonna with the donor (now in the Bergamo Museum) is clearly under the influence of Palma il Vecchio and Lorenzo Lotto and his Sacra Conversazione (now in the Accademia in Venice) echoes Sebastiano del Piombo . From 1515 onwards there was an increased turn to Giorgione , whose style became a model for the coming creative years. But also influences from Titian , Giulio Campagnola , Dosso Dossi and the Nordic schools found their way into his works.

Although he chose Venice as his living space early on, he remained connected to his homeland, Bergamo. Around 1514 he carried out his first important commission for the parish church of Lonno in Val Serianna. Various stays in Bergamo are also suspected in the following years. From 1517 Cariani was a member of the Venice painters' guild. In the same year he is again in Bergamo, where he is followed by his wife Joanna from Venice. There he accepted, among other things, the commission for an altarpiece (today in Milan, Brara) for the Church of San Gottardo. In the following years, which were among the most fruitful of his career, further important works followed, in which he consolidated his style and which had reached full maturity with the Albini family portrait of 1519. In December 1523 Cariani returned to Venice, where he was again inspired by the violence of Palma and adopted it for his works. In the next few years he was one of the busiest and most important painters in Venice, whose works remained of consistently high quality for a long time. It was only in the last decade of his life that his creative power began to visibly decline. The colors used became more and more pale and his figures and forms remained in constant shapes.

In the years between 1528 and 1532 Cariani is not documented in Veneto . This leads some researchers to suspect that he was again in the Bergamo region during this time. However, since there is no evidence for this either, this assumption must be regarded as speculation for the time being. In 1536 he married Battistina again. His father died in the same year.

Cariani left an extensive body of work.
