The Musée Magnin is an art museum in Dijon that emerged from the private collection of Maurice and Jeanne Magnin . It is located in a baroque city palace in the historic city center. The collection includes European works of art mainly from the 16th to 19th centuries as well as furniture, porcelain and old clocks.

history

The museum is located in the Hôtel Lantin, a 17th century Hôtel particulier , on rue des Bons-Enfants in the old town of Dijon. The building has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1939 . After several changes of ownership, Jean-Hughes Magnin acquired the building in 1829, through whose son Joseph Magnin the grandson Maurice Magnin (1861–1939) inherited it. Maurice Magnin worked at the Paris Court of Auditors, his sister Jeanne (1855–1937) studied painting with Henri Harpignies . The wealthy siblings lived in Paris, where they bought works of art, furniture and old clocks at auctions between 1881 and 1935. They were advised on this by the painter Jean-Gabriel Goulinat , who also worked as a restorer in the Louvre . Following the example of the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris, which opened in 1913 , they also planned to open a museum and bequeath the works of art they had acquired to the public. For this purpose, they had the family residence in Dijon rebuilt by Auguste Perret from 1930–1931 . He left large parts of the historical building fabric in its original state, for example the castle-like staircase with the large stone staircase, the columns and rich stucco work. In 1937, the building with the collections was donated to the French state and today it belongs to the Réunion des musées nationaux et du Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées .

collection

Maurice and Jeanne Magnin put together a very extensive collection that was supposed to give an overview of European painting from the Renaissance to the 19th century. The collector couple were wealthy, but did not have the financial resources that other well-known collectors of their time had at their disposal. Accordingly, many great artist names are missing from the collection and some attributions had to be dropped in the past. Today there is no longer any Poussin , Watteau or Prud'hon in the museum, and even a small-format still life with two apples is no longer considered an authentic work by Édouard Manet , but rather the work of an imitator. Nevertheless, the collector couple managed to assemble a balanced collection of different painting schools and subjects and to present them in the context of a private apartment. In addition to a small two-story gallery space, the museum has numerous rooms fully furnished with furniture from the 18th or 18th century. You can see a library, a study, a bedroom and various salons, which in addition to furniture and an art collection, also include porcelain and old clocks.

In the field of Italian painting, the museum has the paintings Susanna and the Ancients by Alessandro Allori , The Visitation by Giovanni Battista Crespi , Portrait of Giovan Donato Corregio as Perseus by Bernardo Strozzi , Moses and the Daughters of Jitro by Giovanni Francesco Romanelli , The Portrait Session by Gaspare Traversi and Mucius Scaevola and Porsenna by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo . The collection of Flemish and Dutch paintings in the museum includes the works The Festival of the Gods by Jan Harmensz. van Bijlert , The woman with a book by Bartholomeus van der Helst , Venus hands over the weapons to Aeneas by Gerard de Lairesse , forest landscape by Frederik de Moucheron and landscape with the Belvedere of the Vatican by Jan Frans van Bloemen . There is also a view of Drottningholm Palace by the Swedish painter Elias Martin .

The stock of French painting is particularly extensive, with a focus on 19th century painting. On view are the pictures Poliphile au bain avec les nymphes by Eustache Le Sueur , Singing Putto by Laurent de La Hyre , The Holy Family by Sébastien Bourdon , La fille aînée de l'artiste coiffant son frère by Claude Lefèbvre , self-portrait as Bacchus by Alexis Grimou , Saint-Jacques intercédant auprès de la vierge en faveur des Âmes du purgatoire by Michel-François Dandré-Bardon , Moise sauvé des eaux by Jean-Jacques Lagrenée , Homme nu renversé sur le sol by Théodore Géricault , Léontine peignant dans l'atelier de Granet au Louvre by François-Marius Granet , Une condamnation sous le règne de François I by Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard and Night over the lagoon by Jules Bastien-Lepage . The museum also has a larger collection of drawings and some sculptures.
