Jan van Bijlert (1598–1671)

Jan van Bijlert , actually Jan Harmensz. van Bijlert , also Jan van Bylert , Jan van Bylaert or Giovanni Bilardo , (* around 1598 in Utrecht , † before November 13, 1671 in Utrecht) was a Dutch painter . He was one of the followers of Caravaggio and is referred to as one of the Utrecht Caravaggists .

Life

Jan van Bijlert was a son of the glass painter Herman van Bijlert , with whom he initially apprenticed. After his death he was, according to Sandrart , a student of Abraham Bloemaert from 1616 . After completing his apprenticeship, he went on an extensive study trip that took him first to France and then to Italy . This was followed by a stay of several years in Rome , where he probably stayed until 1624 and can be traced under the name Giovanni Bilardo until 1621 . There he met the Dutch painters Jan Gerritsz Bronchorst , Cornelis van Poelenburgh and Willem Molijn, with whom he founded a Dutch artist community. It is likely that Bijlert already painted a lot during this time, but to this day no works from this period can be assigned with any certainty, which is probably due to the fact that his early style deviates completely from his later works. Judging by his later style - the earliest known paintings date from the mid-1620s - he fell under the spell of Guido Reni and Caravaggio and his successors, of whom Gerrit van Honthorst in particular exerted a great influence on him. In 1624 he returned to Utrecht, where he finally settled and married in 1625. In 1626 he was one of the founders of the Utrecht Painters' Guild, which he repeatedly headed as dean from 1632.

Bijlert was one of the city's most important painters and his works were in great demand. According to Houbraken , he was also in great demand as a master craftsman and trained numerous apprentices, including Bertram de Fouchier , Ludolf de Jongh , Johannes de Veer , Mattheus Wytmans and Abraham Willaerts .

Today Jan van Bijlert is considered one of the leading Utrecht Caravaggists . He mainly painted religious, mythological and genre pictures, but also worked as a portrait painter. Since he was apparently not a landscape painter, many landscape representations on his pictures are likely to have been carried out by specialized painters, such as B. Herman Saftleven d. J. , who is assigned the landscape on Mosi's discovery in Berlin .
