Giovanni Fagnano

Giovanni Francesco Fagnano dei Toschi (* 31 January 1715 in Senigallia , Papal States ; † 14. May 1797 ) was an Italian mathematician and clergyman.

Giovanni Fagnano was the son of the mathematician Giulio Carlo Fagnano dei Toschi and the only one of his children who showed an interest in mathematics. In geometry he proved that the heights of a triangle are the bisectors of the corresponding height base point triangle and in 1775 published the Fagnano problem, which was later named after him . In analysis he determined and as antiderivatives of and . He also examined how the antiderivatives can be determined by and with the help of partial integration .

In 1772 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
