Giovanni Maria Camilleri

Giovanni Maria Camilleri OESA ( Latin Ioannes Maria Camilleri ; born March 15, 1843 in Valletta , † November 7, 1924 in Rabat , Malta ) was a Maltese religious and bishop of Gozo .

Life

Giovanni Maria Camilleri, who was born and raised in Valletta, entered the Augustinian Order (Augustinian Hermits) in July 1861 and was ordained a priest on December 21, 1867 . Then he was a lecturer and finally prefect of studies. Received his doctorate in theology in 1880, he was elected Provincial of his order in Malta in the same year and in 1884 he was appointed professor of moral theology to the international college at Santa Monica, the generalate of the order in Rome. In 1887 he was appointed Consultor of the Congregation for Bishops .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him Bishop of Gozo on February 11, 1889. He was ordained bishop on February 24th of the same year by Cardinal Cardinal Secretary of State and Cardinal Protector of the Augustinian Order, Cardinal Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro ; Co-consecrators were his predecessor Archbishop Pietro Pace , elected Bishop of Malta , and Guglielmo Giosafat Giuseppe Pifferi OESA, sacristan of the Apostolic Palace . Giovanni Maria Camilleri took possession of his diocese on May 12, 1889.

On January 20, 1924, he resigned from the episcopate and was appointed titular bishop of Methone . He died at the age of 82 in Rabat, Malta.
