Giovanni Sostero

Giovanni Sostero (born March 18, 1964 ; died December 6, 2012 ) was an Italian amateur astronomer . He was one of the leading members of the Associazione Friulana di Astronomia e Meteorologia and an honorary member of the Astronomical Observatory of Višnjan (Croatia).

Sostero has published numerous scientific papers in professional astronomical journals and is listed in NASA's Astrophysics Data System with over 1,880 articles. His main field of research were the smaller bodies of the solar system such as asteroids and comets, as well as variable stars such as symbiotic stars and supernovae .

He also discovered several supernovae: 2009jp, 2008ae, 2008F, 2007cl, 2006br, 2006bm, 2006H, 2006B, 2005ly, 2005kz, 2005kc. In 2000 he discovered a nova in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31).

He died on December 6, 2012 at the age of 48 due to complications from a heart attack.

Honors

The asteroid (9878) Sostero (1994 FQ) was named after him.

In honor of Sostero, who was previously responsible for the soft X-ray metrology laboratory in the facility, the "Giovanni Sostero Award" has been presented since 2013 and is supported by the Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste research facility .
